Wesley Sneijder marries Yolanthe!

Dutch footballer Wesley Sneijder married model and Dutch TV presenter Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen in a ceremony in Tuscany that could only be described as a fashion own goal.

Yolanthe, while unquestionably beautiful in white, wore a dress that would not appeal to all brides - over-the-top as it was with layers, hoops and lace.

And Wesley's choice of outfit was almost as breathtaking as some of the fouls perpetrated by his Netherlands side in their World Cup final defeat by Spain.

The diminutive Dutch midfielder, 26, chose a hideous pale blue shiny suit, which appeared ill-fitting in places and was in serious danger of starting a static electricity fire wherever he went.

The bride and groom could be forgiven for their lack of fashion taste - it was their special day after all - but some of the guests were also dressed in questionable outfits.

Wesley and Yolanthe have been dating for less than a year, after the international and Inter Milan player, who last year won the Champions League and Serie A title, left his wife and four-year-old son last summer.

Wesley's affair with 25-year-old Yolanthe - considered Holland's most glamorous TV presenter - was a scandal that engrossed his home nation.

Their secret relationship was revealed when closed-circuit TV footage of the pair kissing in a car park was broadcast in Holland last year, at a time when Van Kasbergen was living with the country's most famous pop star, Jan Smit.

At the time there was a fierce backlash against Sneijder and his girlfriend, and overwhelming sympathy for Smits, Sneijder's wife, Ramona, and the former couple's little boy, Jessey.

But predictably, given the fickle nature of celebrity, that has now evaporated.

The couple announced their engagement at Christmas and have since been planning the Tuscany wedding - although attire must have been put on the back burner.

They were married in a church in the Church of San Giusto e Clemente in Castelnuovo Berardenga, about nine miles from Siena.

Yolanthe arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and the couple released doves during their ceremony.

The Evolution of Wesley Sneijder: The Statistics prove it all

Wesley Sneijder has continued where he left off with his club side Inter Milan.

After winning an unprecedented Treble domestically, the midfielder has been involved in over half of the Netherlands' goals at the 2010 World Cup, scoring five goals and delivering one assist.

With Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong employed as midfield enforcers behind him, Sneijder has had more freedom to roam up the field and try his luck. He has already found the net five times in South Africa, as many as he managed in the whole of last season's Serie A with Inter.

One other aspect of Sneijder escaping his shackles with the national side is that he has also managed the most shots for Bert van Maarwijk's side (19).

He has been impeccable in his shooting, testing the keeper with nearly two in every three attempts. He has also been excellent in his delivery, completing 85% of passes, that's seven points better than in last season's Champions League.

Sneijder has come a long way from his season in the wilderness with Real Madrid back in 2008/09 where he only started 18 league games.

No longer wanted at the Bernabeu, Jose Mourinho brought him to the San Siro where he demonstrated his all-round ability. More of a creator than a finisher, he conjured up three chances per game in the Italian league.

However, it was in the Champions League that he made a lasting impression, scoring three goals and making six assists in only 11 games, proof that Sneijder really comes into his own on the biggest stage.

In fact, in 16 Champions League and World Cup games this season, he has scored seven goals and delivered seven assists, not a bad return.

The secret behind Wesley Sneijder's superb World Cup form in South Africa

This is the stunning WAG behind Wesley Sneijder's rise from Real Madrid flop to Holland's World Cup superstar.

Sneijder's career has soared so much since marrying gorgeous glamour model Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen in March that a cheeky TV presenter suggested she should score with the rest of the Dutch squad!

She did visit Holland's team hotel in Johannesburg just before the World Cup began - to celebrate her husband's 26th birthday.

And her present to Sneijder? A discreet tattoo of him.

No wonder their story has been the biggest subplot in Holland's run to Tuesday's semi-final against Uruguay.

Little more than year ago, Sneijder was the scapegoat for another bad season at Real Madrid.

But following his wedding, the little playmaker has won the Treble with Inter Milan and on Friday masterminded Holland's superb 2-1 quarter-final victory over hot favourites Brazil.
